North America: True Size & Mercator Distortion

Understanding North America’s Real Size

North America is the third-largest continent by land area, covering approximately 24.71 million square kilometers (9.54 million square miles). However, the popular Mercator projection map significantly distorts our perception of North American countries’ sizes, particularly those in the northern regions like Canada and Alaska.

How Mercator Distortion Affects North American Countries

The Mercator projection, created by Flemish cartographer Gerardus Mercator in 1569, was designed for navigation but creates significant size distortions. This distortion increases dramatically as you move away from the equator toward the poles.

Most Distorted North American Regions

1. Canada and Alaska: These northern regions appear dramatically larger on Mercator maps than their true size. Canada looks roughly twice as large as the United States on most maps, despite being only about 1.2 times larger in actual area.
2. Greenland: While administratively associated with Denmark, Greenland is geographically part of North America. It experiences perhaps the most dramatic distortion of any major landmass on Earth, appearing similar in size to Africa on Mercator maps despite being about 14 times smaller.
3. Northern US States: States like Montana, North Dakota, and Minnesota appear relatively larger than they actually are compared to southern states.

Less Distorted North American Regions

1. Caribbean Islands: Nations and territories in the Caribbean experience minimal distortion since they’re closer to the equator.
2. Mexico and Central America: These regions face relatively minor distortion compared to their northern neighbors.
3. Southern United States: States like Texas, Florida, and California experience less distortion than northern states.

Size Comparisons That Might Surprise You

• Mexico vs. Alaska: Despite Alaska appearing much larger on standard maps, Mexico (1,964,375 km²) is actually about 1.3 times larger than Alaska (1,717,854 km²).
• Central America vs. Texas: All seven Central American countries combined are approximately 2.4 times the size of Texas.
• Cuba vs. Iceland: Though Iceland often appears larger on maps due to its northern latitude, Cuba (109,884 km²) is actually larger than Iceland (103,000 km²).

North American Countries: Size, Rank, and Distortion

The table below shows all North American countries ranked by their true size, along with their Mercator distortion percentage when moved to the equator. This distortion percentage represents how much smaller the country actually is compared to its appearance on standard Mercator maps.

Rank	Country	Flag	Area (km²)	Area (mi²)	Mercator Distortion %
1	Canada 9,984,670	3,855,100	~60-75%
2	United States 9,833,517	3,796,742	~30-60%
3	Greenland (Denmark) 2,166,086	836,330	~70-80%
4	Mexico 1,964,375	758,449	~15-25%
5	Nicaragua 130,373	50,337	~10-15%
6	Honduras 112,492	43,433	~10-15%
7	Cuba 109,884	42,426	~10-15%
8	Guatemala 108,889	42,042	~10-15%
9	Panama 75,417	29,119	~5-10%
10	Costa Rica 51,100	19,730	~5-10%
11	Dominican Republic 48,671	18,792	~10-15%
12	Haiti 27,750	10,714	~10-15%
13	Belize 22,966	8,867	~10-15%
14	El Salvador 21,041	8,124	~10-15%
15	Jamaica 10,991	4,244	~10-15%
16	Bahamas 13,943	5,383	~10-15%
17	Puerto Rico (US) 9,104	3,515	~10-15%
18	Trinidad and Tobago 5,130	1,981	~5-10%
19	Saint Lucia 616	238	~5-10%
20	Antigua and Barbuda 442	171	~10-15%
21	Barbados 430	166	~5-10%
22	Saint Vincent and the Grenadines 389	150	~5-10%
23	Grenada 344	133	~5-10%
24	Dominica 751	290	~5-10%
25	Saint Kitts and Nevis 261	101	~10-15%

Note: Mercator distortion percentages are approximate and vary based on the specific latitude of each country. The percentages indicate how much smaller the country actually is compared to its appearance on Mercator maps.

Mercator vs. Reality: North America’s True Proportions

While the Mercator projection maintains accurate shapes and directions (making it useful for navigation), it significantly distorts area. This means North American countries, especially those in the north, appear much larger than they actually are relative to countries closer to the equator.

The Canada-Mexico Illusion

On Mercator maps, Canada appears to be dramatically larger than Mexico. While Canada is indeed the larger country, the difference is not as extreme as maps suggest. Canada is about 5 times larger than Mexico, not 10-15 times larger as the visual impression on Mercator maps might suggest.

The Alaska Exaggeration

Alaska often appears to rival the contiguous United States in size on Mercator maps. In reality, Alaska (1.7 million km²) is about one-fifth the size of the contiguous United States (8.1 million km²).

Why This Matters

Understanding the true size of North American countries helps provide:

1. Better geographical perspective: Many people overestimate northern territories’ sizes while underestimating regions closer to the equator.
2. Educational clarity: Correcting these misconceptions improves geographical literacy and spatial awareness.
3. Political perspective: The perception of country sizes can unconsciously influence how we view their importance and power in the hemisphere.

Common Questions About North American Country Sizes

How does Canada compare to the United States in true size?

Canada (9,984,670 km²) is approximately 1.5% larger than the United States (9,833,517 km²) when including all US territories. However, the contiguous United States (the “lower 48”) is significantly smaller at about 8.1 million km².

Is Greenland really as large as Africa?

No, this is one of the most dramatic Mercator distortions. Greenland (2.17 million km²) is actually about 14 times smaller than Africa (30.37 million km²), despite appearing similar in size on many world maps.

How does Central America compare to US states in size?

All seven Central American countries combined (523,780 km²) are approximately the size of Texas and Oklahoma together. Texas alone is about 695,662 km².

Which Caribbean island is the largest?

Cuba is the largest island in the Caribbean, with an area of 109,884 km².
