South America: True Size & Mercator Distortion

Understanding South America’s Real Size

South America is the fourth-largest continent by land area, covering approximately 17.84 million square kilometers (6.89 million square miles). Despite its massive size, the popular Mercator projection map creates unique distortion effects that significantly impact how we perceive South American countries’ true dimensions.

How Mercator Distortion Affects South America

The Mercator projection, created by Flemish cartographer Gerardus Mercator in 1569, was designed for navigation but creates significant size distortions. This distortion increases dramatically as you move away from the equator toward the poles.

Distortion Patterns in South America

1. Equatorial Regions: Countries like Colombia, Ecuador, and northern Brazil experience minimal distortion since they’re located near the equator.
2. Southern Regions: Countries like Argentina, Chile, and southern Brazil appear progressively smaller on Mercator maps than their true size. This creates a “shrinking” effect for the continent as it extends southward.
3. The Southern Cone: The southernmost regions of Chile and Argentina appear significantly reduced in size compared to their actual dimensions.

The Unique Distortion Effect on South America

1. Inversed Distortion: Unlike northern continents that appear larger on Mercator maps, much of South America actually appears smaller than it truly is, particularly in the south.
2. North-South Continent: As a continent stretching significantly in the north-south direction, South America experiences varied distortion effects throughout its territory.
3. Comparative Underrepresentation: On world maps, South America often appears smaller relative to North America, Europe, and Asia than it actually is.

Size Comparisons That Might Surprise You

• Brazil vs. Continental United States: Brazil (8.5 million km²) is approximately 5% larger than the contiguous United States (8.08 million km²), though it rarely appears this way on standard maps.
• Argentina vs. Western Europe: Argentina (2.78 million km²) is roughly the size of Western Europe (approximately 2.59 million km²) including France, Germany, Spain, Portugal, Italy, and the United Kingdom combined.
• Colombia vs. Spain and France: Colombia (1.14 million km²) is nearly twice the size of Spain (505,990 km²) and larger than France and Spain combined (1.06 million km²).

South American Countries: Size, Rank, and Distortion

The table below shows all South American countries ranked by their true size, along with their Mercator distortion percentage when moved to the equator. This distortion percentage represents how much larger the country actually is compared to its appearance on standard Mercator maps.

Rank	Country	Flag	Area (km²)	Area (mi²)	Mercator Distortion %
1	Brazil 8,515,767	3,287,956	-10 to +15%
2	Argentina 2,780,400	1,073,500	+15 to +35%
3	Peru 1,285,216	496,225	0 to +15%
4	Colombia 1,141,748	440,831	-5 to +5%
5	Bolivia 1,098,581	424,164	+5 to +15%
6	Venezuela 916,445	353,841	-5 to +5%
7	Chile 756,102	291,933	+15 to +40%
8	Paraguay 406,752	157,048	+10 to +20%
9	Ecuador 283,561	109,484	0 to +5%
10	Guyana 214,969	83,000	-5 to +5%
11	Uruguay 181,034	69,898	+20 to +30%
12	Suriname 163,820	63,251	-5 to +5%
13	French Guiana (France) 83,534	32,253	-5 to +5%

Note: Mercator distortion percentages are approximate and vary based on the specific latitude of each country. Positive percentages indicate that the country is actually larger than it appears on Mercator maps, particularly common for southern countries. Negative percentages indicate the country appears larger on Mercator maps than in reality.

Mercator vs. Reality: South America’s True Proportions

While the Mercator projection maintains accurate shapes and directions (making it useful for navigation), it significantly distorts area. This creates unique challenges when representing South America:

The Inverse Distortion Effect

Unlike regions in the northern hemisphere that appear larger than they actually are on Mercator maps, most of South America experiences the opposite effect—appearing smaller than its true size. This is particularly pronounced in the southern regions of Argentina and Chile, which can appear up to 40% smaller than their actual size. This creates a visual “compression” of the continent that diminishes its perceived size on world maps.

The Brazil Misconception

Brazil, the largest country in South America, experiences variable distortion across its vast territory. Northern Brazil near the equator is represented fairly accurately, while southern Brazil appears progressively smaller than it actually is. This creates a misconception about Brazil’s true size—it’s actually larger than the contiguous United States, though it rarely appears this way on standard maps.

Why This Matters

Understanding the true size of South American countries helps provide:

1. Better geographical perspective: South America is significantly larger than most people perceive from standard maps.
2. Educational clarity: South America contains some of the world’s largest countries, yet their true scale is often underrepresented.
3. Political perspective: The perception of country sizes can unconsciously influence how we view their importance and power on the world stage.

Common Questions About South American Country Sizes

How does Brazil compare to the United States?

Brazil (8.5 million km²) is approximately 5% larger than the contiguous United States (8.08 million km²) and about 13% smaller than the entire United States including Alaska and Hawaii (9.83 million km²).

Is Argentina really larger than most European countries combined?

Yes, Argentina (2.78 million km²) is larger than the combined area of France, Germany, Spain, and the United Kingdom (2.15 million km²). It’s approximately the size of Western Europe.

Why does Chile look so small on maps?

Chile is one of the most distorted countries on Mercator maps due to its extreme north-south extension. Its southern regions appear significantly smaller than they actually are. At 4,270 km (2,653 mi) in length, Chile is longer than the width of the United States from coast to coast.

How does Colombia compare to European countries?

Colombia (1.14 million km²) is more than twice the size of France (551,695 km²) and larger than France, Germany, and the United Kingdom combined (1.14 million km²).
