Asia: True Size & Mercator Distortion

Understanding Asia’s Real Size

Asia is the largest continent by land area, covering approximately 44.58 million square kilometers (17.2 million square miles). However, the popular Mercator projection map significantly distorts our perception of Asian countries’ sizes, particularly those in the northern regions like Russia, Mongolia, and China.

How Mercator Distortion Affects Asian Countries

The Mercator projection, created by Flemish cartographer Gerardus Mercator in 1569, was designed for navigation but creates significant size distortions. This distortion increases dramatically as you move away from the equator toward the poles.

Most Distorted Asian Regions

1. Russia: The northern stretches of Russia appear dramatically larger on Mercator maps than their true size. Russia appears to dominate the Eurasian landmass on most maps far more than it should based on true area.
2. Mongolia and Northern China: These regions look significantly expanded on Mercator projections compared to their actual size.
3. Kazakhstan and Central Asia: These nations experience considerable distortion due to their northern latitude.

Less Distorted Asian Regions

1. Southeast Asia: Countries like Indonesia, Malaysia, and the Philippines experience minimal distortion since they’re close to the equator.
2. India and South Asia: These regions face relatively minor distortion due to their lower latitudes.
3. Middle East: Most Middle Eastern countries experience moderate distortion, less than northern Asia but more than equatorial regions.

Size Comparisons That Might Surprise You

• India vs. Greenland: On Mercator maps, Greenland often appears larger than India. In reality, India (3,287,263 km²) is approximately 1.5 times larger than Greenland (2,166,086 km²).
• Indonesia vs. Scandinavia: Indonesia (1,904,569 km²) is actually larger than Norway, Sweden, and Finland combined (1,174,732 km²), despite northern Europe often appearing much larger on maps.
• Japan vs. Germany: While they may look similar in size on some maps, Japan (377,975 km²) is actually slightly larger than Germany (357,022 km²).

Note: Mercator distortion percentages are approximate and vary based on the specific latitude of each country. The percentages indicate how much smaller the country actually is compared to its appearance on Mercator maps.

Mercator vs. Reality: Asia’s True Proportions

While the Mercator projection maintains accurate shapes and directions (making it useful for navigation), it significantly distorts area. This means Asian countries, especially those in the north, appear much larger than they actually are relative to countries closer to the equator.

The Russia Phenomenon

Russia, which spans both Europe and Asia, is perhaps the most dramatically distorted country in the world on Mercator maps. While it is indeed the largest country by land area, covering 17.1 million square kilometers, it appears approximately 3-4 times larger than its actual size on standard world maps. Siberia in particular seems to dominate much of the northern hemisphere on Mercator maps.

The Southeast Asia Compression

By contrast, Southeast Asian countries like Indonesia, Malaysia, and the Philippines appear compressed and smaller than they actually are. Indonesia is actually the 15th largest country in the world by land area, but this is rarely apparent on traditional maps.

Why This Matters

Understanding the true size of Asian countries helps provide:

1. Better geographical perspective: Many people overestimate northern territories’ sizes while underestimating regions closer to the equator.
2. Educational clarity: Correcting these misconceptions improves geographical literacy and spatial awareness.
3. Political perspective: The perception of country sizes can unconsciously influence how we view their importance and power on the world stage.

Common Questions About Asian Country Sizes

How does Russia compare to other large countries?

Russia (17.1 million km²) is about 1.8 times larger than Canada (9.98 million km²), the second-largest country, and about 1.8 times larger than the United States (9.83 million km²). However, on Mercator maps, Russia often appears to be 3-4 times larger than these countries.

Is Mongolia really as large as it appears on maps?

No, Mongolia appears significantly larger on Mercator maps than it actually is. While still a large country (1.56 million km²), Mongolia is actually smaller than Iran (1.65 million km²) and slightly larger than Peru (1.28 million km²).

How does Indonesia compare to European countries?

Indonesia (1.9 million km²) is larger than the combined area of Germany, France, Spain, Portugal, Italy, and the United Kingdom (1.87 million km² total). Yet on most world maps, Indonesia appears considerably smaller due to its equatorial location.

Why does Japan look smaller than it actually is?

While Japan does experience some Mercator distortion that makes its northern areas appear larger, it’s often depicted on world maps at a scale that makes it appear smaller than its actual size. At 377,975 km², Japan is larger than countries like Germany, Vietnam, and Malaysia.
