The Russian Size Paradox: Still #1, But Exaggerated on Maps

Russia is the undisputed champion of territorial size – the largest country on Earth by a significant margin. But while its true size is genuinely impressive at over 17 million square kilometers, traditional maps have given many people a distorted understanding of just how large it really is.

On standard Mercator projection maps, Russia appears to be a colossal mass dominating the northern hemisphere, often looking comparable in size to entire continents. The reality is more nuanced: Russia is indeed enormous, but not to the degree most maps suggest.

This distortion occurs because the Mercator projection stretches areas near the poles, and with much of Russia located at high latitudes, its apparent size is significantly exaggerated.

Watch Russia shrink to its actual size as we move it toward the equator. We compare it to the USA, Europe, Africa, Greenland, Brazil, Australia, India, China, etc. You can use this country size comparison interactive map here.

Just How Big Is Russia Really?

While Russia does cover more land area than any other country, its size compared to other landmasses provides better perspective:

Comparison Area (km²) Size Relative to Russia
Russia 17,098,246 1.0
Africa (continent) 30,370,000 1.8 times larger
Canada + United States 19,818,187 1.2 times larger
Europe (continent) 10,180,000 0.6 times Russia’s size
Australia (country) 7,692,024 0.45 times Russia’s size

5 Revealing Russia Size Comparisons

  1. Russia vs. United States: Russia is 1.8 times larger than the United States, though the difference appears much greater on Mercator maps. russia vs usa size
  2. Russia vs. Europe: Russia is 1.7 times larger than all of Europe, despite being partially located within Europe itself. russia vs europe size
  3. Russia vs. Australia: Russia is 2.2 times larger than Australia, the sixth-largest country. russia vs australia size (1)
  4. Russia vs. Brazil: Russia is 2.0 times larger than Brazil, the fifth-largest country. russia vs brazil size
  5. Russia vs. China: Russia is obviously much larger than China.russia vs china size

The Geographic Marvel of Russia

Russia’s true size remains astonishing even without cartographic exaggeration:

  • Transcontinental Nation: Russia spans both Europe and Asia, with the Ural Mountains forming the traditional boundary
  • Vast East-West Extent: Russia stretches across 11 time zones, more than any other country
  • Arctic Dominance: Russia possesses the longest Arctic coastline of any nation
  • Border Champion: Russia shares land borders with 14 countries, more than any other nation
  • Geographic Extremes: From subtropical beaches on the Black Sea to the frozen tundra of Siberia, Russia encompasses nearly every climate type

Population vs. Territory: Russia’s Stark Contrast

Despite its immense land area, Russia’s population doesn’t match its territorial status:

  • With approximately 144 million inhabitants, Russia ranks 9th in global population
  • Russia’s population density is just 8.4 people per square kilometer, among the lowest in the world
  • About 75% of Russia’s population lives in the western, European portion of the country
  • Siberia, which constitutes about 77% of Russia’s territory, is home to just 27% of its population

The Siberian Factor: Empty Vastness

Much of Russia’s enormous size comes from Siberia, a region of extremes:

  • Siberia alone covers over 13.1 million square kilometers – larger than any other country except Russia itself
  • If Siberia were an independent country, it would be the largest in the world
  • The region is home to Lake Baikal, the world’s deepest and most voluminous freshwater lake, containing 22% of all fresh surface water on Earth
  • Siberia experiences some of the most extreme temperature variations on the planet, with winter lows reaching -68°C (-90°F) in some areas

Map Distortion and Geopolitical Perception

The exaggeration of Russia’s size on maps has real-world implications. Many geopolitical analysts argue that the visual dominance of Russia on world maps has historically influenced perceptions of its global power and threat level.

While Russia does possess the world’s largest nuclear arsenal and remains a major military and political power, its economic and demographic characteristics don’t match its cartographic presence. Russia’s GDP is smaller than those of Italy, Canada, and South Korea, despite appearing many times larger on standard maps.

This disconnect between visual representation and multidimensional reality illustrates why accurate understanding of geography matters beyond simple academic interest.
