Africa: True Size & Mercator Distortion

Understanding Africa’s Real Size

Africa is the second-largest continent by land area, covering approximately 30.37 million square kilometers (11.73 million square miles). However, the popular Mercator projection map dramatically underrepresents Africa’s true size, creating one of the most significant continental distortions on standard world maps.

How Mercator Distortion Affects Africa

The Mercator projection, created by Flemish cartographer Gerardus Mercator in 1569, was designed for navigation but creates significant size distortions. This distortion increases dramatically as you move away from the equator toward the poles.

Distortion Patterns in Africa

1. Equatorial Position: Africa straddles the equator, with much of its landmass located in the tropics. This positioning means Africa experiences minimal Mercator distortion compared to regions further from the equator.
2. Size Underrepresentation: While Africa itself has minimal internal distortion, it appears dramatically smaller relative to higher-latitude regions like Europe, Russia, Greenland, and North America.
3. North-South Variation: Northern African countries (Algeria, Libya, Egypt) experience slightly more distortion than central and southern African nations.

The “Shrinking Africa” Effect

1. Comparative Distortion: On standard Mercator maps, Africa appears roughly the same size as Greenland, despite being approximately 14 times larger in actual area.
2. Continental Misperception: The combined effect creates a significant underrepresentation of Africa’s true size and importance in our mental geographic model.
3. Historical Implications: This visual diminishment has contributed to misconceptions about Africa throughout history, influencing how the continent is perceived globally.

Size Comparisons That Might Surprise You

• Africa vs. Major Countries Combined: Africa (30.37 million km²) is large enough to fit the United States, China, India, Japan, and all of Europe within its borders.
• Democratic Republic of Congo vs. Western Europe: The DRC (2.34 million km²) is roughly equivalent in size to Western Europe.
• Algeria vs. Western Europe: Algeria (2.38 million km²) is approximately 4.7 times larger than France (551,695 km²) and larger than France, Germany, UK, Italy, Spain, and Portugal combined.

African Countries: Size, Rank, and Distortion

Note: Mercator distortion percentages represent how much larger these countries actually are than they appear on standard Mercator projections when compared to higher-latitude regions. Positive percentages indicate that the country is actually larger than it appears when compared to areas of equal size at higher latitudes on Mercator maps.

Mercator vs. Reality: Africa’s True Proportions

While the Mercator projection maintains accurate shapes and directions (making it useful for navigation), it significantly distorts area. This creates unique challenges when representing Africa:

The “True Size of Africa” Phenomenon

Perhaps no continent suffers more from Mercator distortion than Africa. On standard world maps, Africa appears roughly the same size as Greenland, despite being approximately 14 times larger. Even more dramatically, Africa is actually larger than the United States, China, India, Japan, and all of Europe combined, though this is rarely apparent on world maps.

This visual diminishment has led to what geographers call the “True Size of Africa” phenomenon—a growing awareness of just how dramatically underrepresented Africa’s actual size is in our standard cartographic view of the world.

The “Colonial Cartography” Legacy

Throughout the colonial era, European powers often utilized Mercator projections that visually diminished Africa’s size while exaggerating Europe’s proportions. Some historians and geographers argue that this cartographic distortion reinforced colonial perspectives by visually minimizing Africa’s geographic significance.

Why This Matters

Understanding the true size of African countries helps provide:

1. Better geographical perspective: Africa contains 20% of Earth’s land area but appears far smaller on standard maps.
2. Educational clarity: Africa’s size demonstrates its tremendous geographic diversity and varied ecosystems.
3. Political perspective: The perception of size can unconsciously influence how we view regions’ importance and resources.

Common Questions About African Country Sizes

Is Africa really larger than several major countries combined?

Yes, Africa (30.37 million km²) can fit the entire landmasses of the United States (9.83 million km²), China (9.6 million km²), India (3.29 million km²), Japan (0.38 million km²), and all of Europe (10.18 million km²) combined—with room to spare.

How does Africa compare to other continents?

Africa is the second-largest continent after Asia (44.58 million km²). It’s larger than North America (24.71 million km²), South America (17.84 million km²), Antarctica (14.2 million km²), Europe (10.18 million km²), and Australia/Oceania (8.5 million km²).

Are African countries comparable to European countries in size?

Most African countries are significantly larger than European nations. For example, Algeria (2.38 million km²) is nearly 10 times larger than the United Kingdom (242,900 km²). Even smaller African nations like Uganda (241,038 km²) are comparable to the United Kingdom in size.

Why do we often underestimate Africa’s size?

The Mercator projection, which is still commonly used in classroom maps, online platforms, and media, dramatically shrinks regions near the equator (like Africa) while exaggerating areas near the poles. This persistent visual representation has created lasting misconceptions about Africa’s true geographic scale.
