Latvia: The Pristine Wilderness in a Pocket-Sized Package
Did you know Latvia, smaller than West Virginia, contains Europe’s most untouched wetland wilderness? This compact Baltic nation of just 64,589 square kilometers (24,938 square miles) boasts more bogs, fens, and marshes per capita than any European country.
Despite its diminutive dimensions, Latvia delivers extraordinary natural diversity – from the pristine 500km Baltic coastline to ancient forests covering 52% of the country. With fewer than 2 million inhabitants, Latvia maintains one of Europe’s lowest population densities, allowing wildlife to thrive across its limited territory.
Since world map is affected by the Mercator projection distortion, we need to adjust for that. Here is the true size of Latvia compared to different countries and at different latitudes on the map:

7 Mind-Blowing Latvia Size Facts
- Latvia is 265 times smaller than Russia yet contains the EU’s most extensive untouched bog complexes
- Though smaller than West Virginia, Latvia has a longer coastline than Georgia, South Carolina, and North Carolina combined
- Latvia would fit into Texas nearly 11 times, yet has higher forest coverage percentage than any U.S. state except Maine
- Latvia’s territory is 42% the size of Belarus, its largest neighbor, but has 30% more rivers per square kilometer
- Despite being just 1.8% the size of Kazakhstan, Latvia has more freshwater resources per capita
- You can drive across Latvia’s entire width in just 4 hours (450 km/280 miles)
- Latvia contains 12,000+ rivers and 3,000+ lakes – approximately one water body per 4 square kilometers
Latvia’s Position Among the Baltic States
Latvia sits in the middle of the three Baltic states both geographically and by size:

Size Twins: Countries and States Similar to Latvia
| Size Comparison | Flag | Area (km²) | How It Compares to Latvia |
|---|---|---|---|
| Latvia | 64,589 | Our Baltic baseline | |
| Lithuania | 65,300 | 1% larger with 1.5 million more residents | |
| Estonia | 45,227 | 30% smaller despite having nearly 3,800 islands | |
| West Virginia (US state) | 62,259 | 4% smaller with similar mountainous terrain | |
| Croatia | 56,594 | 12% smaller but with a similar Adriatic coastline length | |
| Ireland | 70,273 | 9% larger than Latvia with a similar maritime climate | |
| Lake Superior (Great Lake) | 82,100 | This single lake is 27% larger than the entire country of Latvia |
Latvia vs. Russia: The Baltic Minnow and the Eurasian Giant
Latvia would fit into Russia an astounding 265 times! When overlaid on Russia’s vast territory, Latvia appears as a barely visible speck – smaller than many Russian cities.
Yet despite this overwhelming size disparity, Latvia’s forest coverage percentage (52%) exceeds Russia’s (49%), creating proportionally more woodland habitats within a fraction of the territory.
Most surprisingly, Latvia maintains higher development indicators than Russia despite controlling a territory less than 0.4% the size of its eastern neighbor, with a GDP per capita approximately 35% higher.

Latvia (highlighted in red) would fit into Russia 265 times! Yet this tiny Baltic nation has higher forest coverage percentage than its giant neighbor.
Latvia vs. United States: Lost in America
Latvia would fit into the continental United States approximately 149 times. It’s smaller than 47 of the 50 U.S. states, with its closest size equivalent being West Virginia.
If placed over the eastern United States, Latvia would barely span the distance from Washington D.C. to Philadelphia – yet this modest territory contains more wetlands than many U.S. states three times its size.
Despite its small dimensions, Latvia’s 498 kilometers of Baltic shore exceeds the Atlantic coastlines of Georgia, South Carolina, and Maryland combined.

Latvia’s Four Distinct Regions
Despite its modest size, Latvia divides into four culturally and geographically distinct regions:
| Latvian Region | Area (km²) | Similar Size To | Geographic Character |
|---|---|---|---|
| Kurzeme (West) | 13,607 | Montenegro | Coastal region with beaches, fishing villages, and windswept pine forests |
| Vidzeme (North) | 15,346 | East Timor | Latvia’s highest region with rolling hills, sandstone cliffs, and the Gauja Valley |
| Zemgale (South) | 10,732 | Lebanon | Flat, fertile plains with Latvia’s richest agricultural land |
| Latgale (East) | 14,547 | Swaziland | The “Land of Blue Lakes” with 2,000+ lakes and extensive wetlands |
5 Natural Wonders Packed into Latvia’s Small Territory
1. Europe’s Bog Capital
Latvia contains some of Europe’s most extensive and pristine wetland systems. Approximately 10% of Latvia’s territory consists of bogs, fens, marshes, and swamps – one of Europe’s highest percentages of wetland coverage.
The Great Ķemeri Bog just 40 kilometers from Riga features a distinctive mosaic of pools and peat hummocks covering over 5,000 hectares, while the Teici Bog Nature Reserve protects an extraordinary 19,779 hectares of pristine raised bog.
2. The Ancient Forest Realm
Latvia’s territory contains extraordinary forest coverage, with woodlands occupying approximately 52% of the national territory – the fourth-highest percentage in Europe.
These forests include significant old-growth stands, with approximately 15,000 hectares of documented primary woodland that has never been clear-cut. Latvia supports healthy populations of wildlife extinct in much of Europe, including approximately 700 wolves, 400 lynx, and over 55,000 beaver.
3. The Singing Sands
Latvia’s 498-kilometer Baltic coastline contains remarkable dune systems, with fine quartz sands that create distinctive “singing dunes” that produce sound when walked upon.
The coastal dunes along the remote Kurzeme coast between Liepāja and Ventspils reach heights of 30+ meters above sea level and represent some of Europe’s least disturbed coastal ecosystems.
4. The River Nation
Despite its small size, Latvia contains more than 12,500 rivers and streams with a combined length exceeding 38,000 kilometers – enough to wrap around Earth’s equator nearly once.
This creates one of Europe’s highest river densities at approximately 0.59 kilometers of flowing water per square kilometer of territory. Approximately 70% of Latvia’s rivers maintain their natural channels without significant modification.
5. The Devonian Sandstone Wonderland
Latvia contains spectacular sandstone formations created by exposures of 350-400 million-year-old Devonian sandstone deposits.
The most remarkable are along the Gauja River Valley, where red sandstone cliffs rise up to 30 meters above the water. The Gutmanis Cave is the Baltic region’s largest sandstone cave with an impressive entrance 10 meters wide and 10 meters tall.
